New Items in the Shop!

It's down to crunch time now! I'm a bit crazy and will be doing a show every weekend starting this Saturday until the end of August. Who needs weekends for relaxing anyway!

What's Old is New Again

I'm back with more designs for the Artbeads Blogging for Beaders Challenge! The theme is "What's Old is New Again." The idea was to take inspiration from the past by incorporating old, vintage, or antique items into our designs, but to also include modern components. I decided to take a couple of gorgeous antique styled components coupled with antique brass and copper chain and findings and pair them with contemporary Swarovski and fire polished glass beads.

This first piece incorporates a beautiful Kabela Design filigree component with the sparkle of a Swarovski copper rivoli. The rivoli is bead bezeled in golden rose colored delicas. I think I may have used the "wrong" side of the component, but it still has charm!

This next piece is a simple brass chain that has been embellished with a range of Swarovski crystals in warm brown tones. To finish the honey feel of the bracelet, a little bee charm decorates the clasp. A simple pair of earrings completes the duo.

This bracelet combines metal and fiber for a simple yet aged appeal. Glass beads and brass wire compliment the triangle link.

This next piece has a gorgeous Victorian style link. I kept it simple by adding beaded links to the chain.

Finally, this piece reminds me of the industrial revolution, since it's the only one so far to incorporate silver. It feels more modern than the others, yet still looks antique. The Swarovski briolette adds a much needed punch to the ribbon necklace.

Winter Enchantment

Living in Rochester, NY provides ample snowfall in the winter season. This year we're way above average with over 100 inches of snow so far. I'm not a huge fan of the cold, windy, blizzardy days. Today is an exception though. The sun is out, the sky is bright blue, and the snow covered trees look wonderful. Again, Artbeads has offered a chance to embody the feeling of winter through jewelry. I chose to use color to reflect the theme.

Here are some designs that incorporate glass beads that grade from aqua to clear paired with Swarovski Crystal.

I had to give the Swarovski Helios pendant a try. The one I used is in indocolite. It has a really neat geometry and has a wonderful tactile quality.

I also selected a strand of cobalt colored glass roundelles and used them in a few different ways. The copper doesn't embody winter as well as silver, but I couldn't resist the little snowflake charms.

And of course there is more Swarovski! I hadn't seen the snowflake pendant yet so I gave it a shot too! I wish the hole went from side to side but I made it work! I also used some briolettes because they have a wonderful shape and are a budget friendly alternative for using AAA gemstones.

And finally, here are a few miscellaneous items. The blue Picasso beads were a bit darker than I thought they would be, but they still look beautiful.

Budgeting Your Business Spending for 2011

Even though we're more than a month into the new year, it's still not too late to develop a supply spending budget! I spent my first year as a registered business spending here and there without much of a plan. I suppose that's fine if you're just starting out while you get a feel for things, but if you've been growing, watching your spending will really help to increase your profit. Make-it Mondays: Studio Visit #8 Beadwork By Amanda

This week's studio visit is with a veteran seller and long time RNESTer, Amanda Preske, of Beadwork By Amanda. Amanda opened her Etsy shop in 2006 and and is an art market pro. Since then she has gone on to have her work published in a book and co-founded Mayday Underground Crafts and Art here in Rochester, NY. All while working towards a Phd!!! So how does she do it?

Buenahelena: Where do you work/where is your studio?

Beadwork By Amanda: My primary work space is the lime craft room. I also have amassed equipment that is considerably messy that is used in the basement. It is so awesome to have my own space. Previously, I lived in a one bedroom apartment so the living room and dining room became my studio. It was a terrible arrangement and bits of circuit board and beads wound up everywhere.

B: What is your medium or product?

BBA: On Etsy, my product is jewelry and accessories made with recycled circuit boards and resin. I make bracelets, necklaces, rings, cuff links and tie tacks, key chains, and dabble in other product types. I also have a second shop that focuses on resin kits and tutorials. Off Etsy, I make beaded and beadwoven jewelry, felt key chains, and magnets that I sell at shows and festivals. My studio space is also used for the random scrapbook or art projects.

B: What is the biggest challenge about your space and how have you worked through it?

BBA: The biggest challenge has been organizing the space. It’s the largest bedroom in my house, but I still struggle to find space for everything. I have divided my room into zones that are all used for specific tasks. The green counter is where I make non-resin jewelry, and the pine desk is for resin work. The small desk and black counter are for order processing and packaging, administrative stuff, and a space for anything else that doesn’t have a spot. When we were transitioning from living in the apartment to moving in, we remodeled the kitchen, so I commandeered the cabinets which offer a lot of storage for my zillions of beads and tools. The basement is where I keep the messy circuit board cutting supplies.

B: Describe a typical day at the studio.

BBA: Since I am a PhD student, there is, unfortunately, no typical day. Sometimes I’ll be in there in the early morning packing an order, or up really late doing resin. I usually spend all day Sunday cutting circuit board, photographing stuff made on Saturday, and making new beaded jewelry. I usually reserve updating my shop to weekdays when I have downtime (like when I’m waiting for a reaction to run).

B: What do you love the most about being a crafter/artist/etsy seller?

BBA: I love the fact that I have complete control over everything I do. My success is directly proportional to the amount of effort I put in. Creating comes naturally so I don’t feel like I’m being forced to do or understand something. Etsy is wonderful because I can reach customers all over the world and the cost is very low. Etsy doesn’t require an 8 hour day at a $300 booth that might result in a terrible sunburn! I also love that my space is totally mine. I’ve avoided making the whole house lime green, so my craft room is my place to go wild and put up whatever I want.

Fall with Artbeads

This installment of beading with Artbeads products is two-fold. As expected, the theme this time around is fall. However, to add complexity and excitement to the challenge, we were encouraged to design jewelry based on the fall color forecast put out by Pantone. Here's what's in for fall.

I so love the vividness of these colors! This first necklace is a combination of colors including lagoon and a border on lipstick red and living coral. While it doesn't quite make use of a color scheme based on color theory, red and turquoise are always stunning together.

While I usually tend to shy away from colors that aren't bright, I still have a soft spot for colors that just "click." The beads in this next set are all from Artbeads. I was drawn to the movement and range of the focal bead, and the pretty glass rondelles just complimented it perfectly! Endive and golden glow with a bit of chocolate truffle are represented in this set.

Next is a couple pairs of earrings. The first matches the purple orchid color in the form of amethyst Swarovski crystal. I wanted to create something a little more glitzy and lush to juxtapose it against the warm, earthy hues usually associated with autumn. The larger crystal is called a graphic, and it's really cool! The facets make an otherwise odd shape look really interesting.

Finally, I've paired my all time favorites, blue and green, or in this case, lagoon and woodbine, with copper to create a pair of earrings that really feels like autumn. The leaf beads are really pretty and have other bits of color mixed in.

That's it for now. I'll have more in the near future. I received some really pretty copper leaf beads and I've been toying with the color scheme tool alluded to above. If you need your crafty fix and live in Rochester, NY, pop on over to Mayday Underground next weekend.

Hiatus, Again

Apparently I can't keep a blog. When I go 2 months without any posts, you must know something is up!

Well, what do you know! Something is up! Things actually.

The second Mayday Underground show is coming up in less than 2 weeks! We've been preparing like crazy getting everything organized. This round of Mayday should be even more awesome! We have more advertising, more support, more vendors, and a better time in the year for a show! Plus it's going to be a luau craft show! I'm so excited! You can check out the Mayday Website or visit us on Facebook and share Mayday with all of your friends! I'm pretty sure I'll find plenty of gifts at this show :)

Aaaand I started graduate school. I'm going for my PhD in chemistry. Physical chemistry to be more specific. I would go deeper than that, but even I don't know what I want to do for my thesis. It will have to do with nanomaterials or polymers and their electronics, but other than that it's up in the air. Plus I'm pretty sure you don't want to hear anything more specific than that!

The structure is so different. Just like the transition from high school to college afforded a lot more freedom, graduate school is another step in that direction. I will take 5 classes of my choice (I'm taking quantum chemistry and solar cells this semester) in the next year and a half, and I have to TA 7 units of undergraduate chemistry. This semester I'm teaching 2 general chemistry workshops and 1 lab. Then I have to take the cumes, exams that no one is fond of. Then add 5 years in a lab, and hopefully I'll come out with a PhD. Simple, right?

So that's why I'm not around. If you're looking for jewelry, have no fear! I'll have the next installment of the blogging for beaders program with some designs inspired by the colors that are "in" for fall.

I don't think I will ever remove another tile floor. Don't ever kid yourself into thinking it's an easy, do-it-yourself project! Hehe, what's that about hindsight is 20/20? While I absolutely love our new floor, it was one of the most tedious projects to date. It took nearly 4 straight days and an odd array of tools to get the old floor up. The guys kept asking, was it really worth it? What's wrong with the old floor, it's white, everything goes with white?

Try explaining to a guy why a stark white floor doesn't look as good as a tannish/yellowish/brownish floor when your cabinets are warm maple colored and the walls will be a soft yellow, and that all of the appliances are black. White just doesn't work. It's too harsh, too plain, too hard to keep looking white, and it would be the only white thing in the room.

Before the floor went in, we had to remove all the old cabinets (all 5 of them) and remove the old tiles and base moulding. Here's the "before" photos. Notice the extreme lack of counter space and sweet particleboard countertop.

Here's a random dining room shot just to show the disarray. Any flat surface became fair game for tape measures, levels, screwdrivers, drills, you name it (and kitchen cabinet boxes in this case). Note the awesome bed sheet curtains. We'll have real curtains eventually, I promise!

Next, the old floor was taken up. We didn't think it would be that bad, but anytime you got a corner of the tile up, the rest just shattered. We used chisels and hammers, shovels, a huge ice cutter thing, a crow bar, and just about anything that could be used as a lever/wedge. My brother models the shovel method (which I don't think worked that well).

Then the backerboard with a layer of mortar underneath went down. It's also called cement board. The *nice* thing about remodeling an old house is that the floors aren't very level. This made installing the floor particularly tricky.

After the backerboard and mortar settled in, it was time to put on the new tile. We used a ceramic tile, so it will be very durable. That's really important because the doorway next to the kitchen is a high traffic area.

The tile took about 6 hours to get down between mortaring, adhering, measuring, and cutting. Our kitchen is a goofy shape, it's rectangular with one wall that has "steps" taken out (which makes the room smaller) for ductwork. Plus it wraps around a small wall and goes towards the side entrance. The tile laying went smooth by the windows, but got funky when we got closer to all of the doorways.

I had a little too much fun photographing the tile spacers. The sheer quantity (400 or so) reminds me of containers of beads.

I don't have a full photo of the completed floor, but it will come with a photo of the completed kitchen. We still need to finish several other projects. We still need to tile the counters with black granite, install the stove hood, put up the breakfast bar, finish framing out the "hole in the wall (shown below)," put on the cabinet hardware (since the cabinets are up), and install the tile backsplash. That sounds like a lot more now that I've written it out!

Summer Beading

Preparing an old house over the summer, between work, is a really tough thing to do! Between the painting, priming, sanding, chiseling, nailing, moving, weeding, and general disarray, the beads get pushed away. I even went to a bead show over my lunch break last week and haven't even had the time to look at them and marvel in their awesomeness!

However, before things got displaced and relocated to boxes, I was able to make several summer inspired items. The idea was to stick to bright colors seen in the summer months. Summer is pretty short in upstate New York, so I try to soak it in while it lasts!

These tanzanite earrings remind me of some beautiful perennials growing in my back yard. I'm not sure what they're called, but they are long stalks with graceful little bell-shaped purple flowers. The flower looks like a very delicate version of a lilac mixed with an inverted tulip. These earrings are made with Swarovski crystal teardrop pendants and bicones.

These sweet earrings are a combination of lucite flowers, czech glass leaves, and Swarovski crystal.

My addiction to seed beads prevails! While most of these beads are already part of my stash, the new purple iris size 8 seed beads are a delightful addition. They coordinate perfectly with my lilac colored size 11 seed beads. If you want to make your own pendants like this, I sell the tutorial in my Etsy shop here.

Although these are quite simple and delicate necklaces, they really pack a punch in the sparkle department! The top necklace makes use of a Bermuda blue faceted Swarovski teardrop. The color flashes in a variety of deep blue-green colors and is just beautiful. The bottom necklace features a cubic zirconia teardrop pendant with a small lucite flower. There are lots of lovely glass items to choose from to use as stunning focals.

Housewarming

I think housewatering sums it up better. We closed on the new house Wednesday morning and stopped by last night to get things started. We have the apartment until the end of July, so we're going to take our time, paint, and get everything prepped before we move.

We brought some small boxes along with painting supplies with us. I started taping off the living room (colors to be disclosed soon!) and Chris was getting the music set up. He wanted to wash his hands and discovered that no water was coming out of the faucets.

We went downstairs and saw a few ceiling tiles were on the floor, and for some reason the laundry tub was moved to a different wall. Things looked fishy. I called my real estate agent to see if someone had gone back to the house after the final walk through. She said there hadn't. We went back upstairs to see if anyone had gotten in somehow.

All of the doors and windows were locked. Except one, of course. Since the house is old, the wood by the lock was rotted and half of the lock was on the floor. We figured someone stood on our recycling bin, reached up and let themselves in.

When we went back downstairs to try and figure out why you would break into an empty house, we discovered that many copper pipe sections had been removed. We found pipe insulation laying around and cut off pipes everywhere. There was water dripping from a pipe that was at one point connected to the water heater. The main water line is nowhere to be found and all of the pipe leading to and from the first floor bathroom was removed.

We had a police report filed. That was fun. We had to wait almost 3 hours for them to come, and it was almost 11pm by the time we left. They offered to have a technician come by and try to take fingerprints, but Rochester had other ideas for us since there was another shooting that night so the technician wouldn't be ready to come until even later- maybe not until 1 or 2 am. I don't know about you, but both of us had to go to work today, we're leaving for Syracuse for a craft show, and we still hadn't packed so we really needed sleep (and food and water). They said it would be difficult to pull prints from wood anyway so we told them not to worry about it. They took some photos and then we went home.

According to the one quote we got (we'll get at least 2 more quotes), it's going to cost $2000 to repair because all of the pipes were twisted and ripped out.

The emergency dispatch lady told us we were pretty lucky. Usually burglars leave the water on. At least our basement just had patches of water- no more than half an inch in places.

But really? What kind of a house warming is that?! If I do well at the show this weekend I think I'll be okay- just as long as the bad things don't start piling up. I'm just glad we didn't move any valuables in yet.

I promise I have not fallen off the edge of the earth! Things have been really busy so the blog needs a little dusting :)

As referenced to in the previous post, I organized an indie craft show with a friend. It was a huge success! More info can be found on the facebook page and blog, but here's a visual recap of the event.

In other news, I'll be a homeowner soon! It's an awesome old house with all of the original hardwood floors. In the coming months, I'll be sharing photos of the improvements and projects that we do!

Spring Beading

I seem to have trouble remembering to photograph items before I turn them into jewelry! Thanks to Artbeads, I again have received some awesome spring-y items to try out. I chose a range of flowers, leaves, vines, pastels, and bright spring greens to make a range of pieces well suited to the changing seasons.

This first necklace uses these really cool felt beads. A friend of mine makes really cute needle felted creatures. Similarly (but not nearly as cute!) are these beads. I've modernized the look by combining the natural, fuzzy feel of the beads with clean lines of metal. A string of bright turquoise delicas finishes out the necklace to keep it from getting too big.

Next, I had to get my Swarovski fix! I chose to use a peridot twist pendant combined with simple wire wrapped crystals. I also made a wire wrapped bracelet using amethyst polygon crystal beads, along with some real amethyst faceted rondelles.

I chose a couple of neat leaf components. The first is a leaf pendant from Tierracast. I kept the design simple since the leaf is neat by itself. The other is another lariat (similar idea to what I did for the Valentine beading post). The toggle is a really cool leaf and branch design. I kept that to the front and mixed it with lime chalk turquoise, peridot crystal, and a simple chain dangle from the clasp.

After months of seeing the vine bails for the Swarovski briolettes, I had to give it a try. I went with a large, uber-sparkly crystal AB briolette with the silver vine bail. They're really simple, but pack quite a punch!

Finally, I made a ton of earrings, as usual. I've always wanted to try making earrings with the resin flowers. I did just that, and combined them with a bunch of miscellaneous bead caps and spacer beads I had stashed away. There's a copper and olivine version of the above earrings, some felt earrings to match the necklace, and finally, I tried some glass flower beads.

Snow + Rainbows

The other day, it took me about an hour to get home, when the commute is usually just 20 minutes. The culprit? A lovely burst of lake-effect snow that started an hour before rush hour. The news stations all went crazy delivering stories from the locals. Some said it was a complete white-out in places. See, it really wasn't that bad, but our several week streak of decent weather and highs almost reaching 50 had people thinking winter was over in the middle of January. Haha!

So, I bring you excellent cheerful-rainbow-y-goodness to bust those winter blues! Even if your winter low is 65, you can still enjoy these awesome Etsy finds!

Beadweaving Bliss

I've been on quite the beadweaving kick lately. Plus I've been having a bit of fun playing with new techniques. The first is an "orb" pendant I made using a method developed by Gill Slone (B&B). It is made with size 15s, size 11 delicas, and Swarovski crystal bicones.

I also tried to make a beaded ring. It's a little lumpy, and not so round (more triangular-square-ish) but it makes for a neat frame for crystal.

I'm still on a rivoli kick, so I had to make something a little more substantial than just a pendant. I made a whole necklace!

Finally, I decided to give the Cellini spiral a shot since I've been ogling over the technique for a while now. I combined it with some Swarovski crystal (of course!) and here's the result...

Valentine Beading Part 2

As promised, I'm back with some more Valentine's Day inspired jewelry designs!

I've always dreamed of making a lush bracelet full of beautiful cane glass beads. Those pink beads pictured yesterday were staring at me all night, so I put two and two together to make a dangle bracelet! I also made some pseudo matching earrings, although the style is a bit different. A little extra punch is offered by bright hot pink Czech fire polished glass beads.

To feed my bead weaving obsession, I spent several hours creating this next piece. I started by making six beadwoven tubes using pink luster delica beads and red thread. The beaded beads, heart chain (which makes a reappearance!), and Swarovski crystal bicones are all connected with sterling wire wrapping. Notice I've also put the heart toggle clasp in the font to show it off and create the look of a lariat. I might just have to make more of these...

Valentine Beading

This is the time of year that you can't go anywhere without seeing a heart or some form of romanticism. Find no exception here! Artbeads.com has provided me with some Valentine's day themed items to try out. I was a bit too excited to make jewelry, so I started to make some before realizing that I hadn't photographed the raw supplies. Whoops! I did get a shot of the gorgeous furnace glass beads though!

I'm still on a bit of an earring kick, so here's an array of v-day inspired designs. The top left pair features pretty antique copper heart beads and Swarovski crystal.

The top right pair has Swarovski crystal and the cutest sterling heart chain. I've also made little hearts with square sterling wire.

The bottom right makes use of the same heart chain as well as a dangling assortment of Swarovski crystal in shades of pink and rose. The awesome part of those is the faceted Swarovski heart at the bottom.

The bottom left pair uses the furnace glass beads featured above and Czech fire polished glass beads.

For those less "girlie," I made a more subtle design using black heart beads and twisted glass barrels. The earrings don't exactly match, but I'm not one for making things match perfectly because it's less interesting.

I also made a necklace! The composition of the large red heart bead is a mystery since I obtained it in a bead swap, but it's suited perfectly to this simple necklace. It also has a sterling key charm and more Swarovski crystal!

As usual, I took apart a bunch of things recently looking for circuit boards. It's amazing where you'll find them. Even the most unsuspecting devices have them. My most recent dissections were of an old-school monitor and a keyboard. They were destined for the e-dump so I figured I'd scavenge for supplies.

I wasn't too shocked by the keyboard since I'd already taken apart a calculator (see this post for a photo). Here's a neat shot of the caps lock, num lock, and scroll lock lights next to the plastic sheets that lie under the keys.

The monitor really looks like something out of a space movie. At least the board is huge!

There's something about Swarovski crystal rivolis that I just can't resist. What started as an innocent project turned into an obsession. That's not the problem though - these projects require smaller sized seeds bead that I had to order. Now I have even more beads in my stash...

Oh well, I'm not exactly complaining. I just happened to look at how much I spent on supplies last year. Let's just say I could have purchased about 300 DVDs - you know, boyfriend monetary units! Kidding aside, I came across a blog earlier today (unfortunately I can't remember where it was...) where the author resolved to not purchase any new supplies for all of 2010, with the exception of necessities like replacing broken tools and things of that nature. The point was not only to clean out a messy space, but to face the challenge of creating new things with supplies on hand.

I don't want to make any crazy promises like that, but I'm already off to a good start! I'm hoping to cut down on spending by 40%. It's going to be really hard since I'm planning on buying a kiln and moving to a new place with my own studio, but at least I have a figure to shoot for!

What are your crafty goals for the year? I think it would be nice to take a chunk out of my bead stash that hasn't been touched in years :)

Sterling Silver and Glass

Once again, Artbeads.com has been wonderful by providing some awesome sterling silver components and glass beads to try. I selected a range of beads and silver components including silver leaf charms, Venetian glass beads, Czech glass bricks, Bali sterling pendants, and sterling silver links. See below what I picked out!

I've been in quite an earring mood lately, so most of the jewelry I have created with these items were made into earrings. The pair on the left was made with very fine sterling silver chain, glass flower beads, and a 4mm Swarovski bicone. The pair on the right was made with Venetian glass beads, sterling silver flower bead caps, and aquamarine Swarovski crystal beads.

These simple earrings make use of Czech glass bricks, brown tone fire polished beads, and copper findings. The beads have a really nice earthy, vintage feel to them.

These sterling and swarovski earrings have really cool links. I've dressed up the copper leaf earrings by adding a large jumpring. The back side of the leaf beads is a copper finish, that really looks neat in sunlight.

I also made several simple necklaces using a sterling silver leaf pendant and crystal, and a really neat Bali sterling silver pendant paired with a gemstone teardrop.

I promise...I do still have a blog! I've just graduated from RIT with a degree in chemistry, while working 2 part time jobs, running my Etsy shop, and doing craft shows every weekend. Unfortunately, blogging was at the back of my mind through all of that!

Now I'm working part-time until I go to graduate school. I would like do do research on organic photo voltaic devices (solar cells). I'll spare you the gory detail :) This leaves me a lot more time to do things like blog and craft. Yay!

This is one the newest additions to my line of circuit jewelry. It is all sterling silver, including the chain, so it has a very feminine, delicate feel. There's still time to ship for the holidays too.

Soon, I'll be sharing my awesome Artbeads finds and what I've made with their sterling silver and glasss beads and components.

Chemical Kinetics!

I had to make a video that had to do with kinetics for my class. Seriously, that was the only criteria. Click here to watch it!

I went for the good old neon food coloring to make it :) We tried using fluorescent polymers too but those were done in the dark with the exception of the UV lamp so it didn't come out as well. There's an introduction done by my research adviser, who happens to be British. It added some much needed humor :)

For our friends in other parts of the world, a little information on Homecoming is probably in order!

Homecoming is an annual tradition in the United States. The Universities of Missouri is often given the credit for establishing this tradition as far back as 1891, and it has evolved ever since.

People, towns, high schools and colleges come together, usually in late September or early October, to welcome back former residents and alumni. It is usually built around a central event, such as a banquet, and a game of American football or, occasionally basketball. Activities vary widely among schools, but usually consist of a football game played on the school's football field, activities and dances for students and alumni, and the coronation of a Homecoming Queen and King.

So come join us on the gridiron for a little tailgating party with drinks and great food, then dance the night away with specials and goodies designed to finish Homecoming in style.

For those who like their drinks with a little style, this Tailgate Mimosa is just the ticket:

Prep Time: 1 minute
Ingredients:·

1 oz Orange Juice
3 oz Champagne
1 oz Chambord Liqueur
* If you are at a tailgate, just eyeball it!*

Preparation:
Pour Chambord and Orange Juice into a tall flute. Add Champange. Add a rasberry or strawberry for garnish and enjoy!!!

and for an awesome tailgate appetizer, this dip will have your guests preferring food to football ;)

GUINNESS AND CHEDDAR DIP

4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 shallot, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, chopped
2 ounces Guinness stout
6 ounces grated sharp Cheddar
2 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
1/2 teaspoon caraway seeds
1/2 teaspoon paprika
Salt and pepper
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
Assorted crackers and crudités

Preparation

In a small skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add shallot and sauté until soft, 3 minutes. Add garlic; cook for 2 minutes longer. Transfer to a food processor and let cool.Add Guinness, cheeses, caraway and paprika to food processor and blend until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Place in a serving bowl, cover and chill for at least 4 hours. Sprinkle with parsley and serve with crackers and crudités.

Serves 8

I have been so busy! I'm a full time student, taking my last quarter of classes before graduating in November with a bachelors in chemistry. I'm also working at Xerox on a research project, and I'm working for my research adviser at school, plus I'm running my Etsy shop and doing craft shows! I'm signed up to do craft shows for the next 4 weekends in a row. Crazy! I know :)

I just brought my plants inside the other day for fear that I would forget to bring them in before a frost. To my surprise, one of them was flowering! Any guesses as to what plant it is?

A bug was also the source of my amusement. He was just sitting on a stop sign post.

Swarovski Crystal

Who doesn't love a healthy dose of Swarovski crystal?! Artbeads has tons of beautiful, sparkly beads and components to choose from. I got a whole bunch of different beads to give them a try. I really like the crystal rivolis because they have so much depth and dimension. The funky polygon shape in padparadscha is also really neat!

Here's what I've made with the Rivolis and a little bit of bead weaving with size 11 and size 15 seed beads:

I had a lot of fun incorporating Swarovski Crystal bicones into bead woven bracelets. The wavy lime bracelet is inspired from a bracelet in the most recent Bead and Button magazine, and has lime crystals in the center. The deep blue bracelet makes use of dark sapphire bicone crystals.

Check back here in a week or so and I'll show you what I've done with some more of the Swarovski Beads that I have, and to get some inspiration!

School Supplies

As mentioned in a previous blog post, I promised to use 10% of my sales during the Etsy Twitter Team back to school sale to purchase school supplies to donate. Although the sale is not yet over, I've purchased many of the supplies already. I followed a lot of the ads to make sure I could get the most supplies for the money. I purchased 2 backpacks, a scientific calculator, and bunches of protractors, rulers, pencils, pens, paper, folders, binders, highlighters, notebooks, and erasers. I also purchased a bunch of supplies for the artsy kids including crayons, colored pencils, markers, scissors, glue, and sharpies. I still have a little bit more that I have to purchase, but what I do have covers my entire dining room table!

Return of the Tomatoes!

In an earlier post(<-- click to see!), I showed photos of my tomato and pepper plants. That was about 6 weeks ago. Now look at them! They are GIGANTIC! I measured, from the soil level, them to be just over 5 feet tall. I had to bring out ye olde closet rod since it was the only thing long (too long actually) enough to hold up the plants.
My peppers are coming along nicely too. They are about the size of my fist right now. I'm interested to see what color they turn since I bought a seed pack that had green, red, orange, purple, and white peppers in the mix.

Out of the ten or so cosmos seeds I planted, two of them actually sprouted. One finally bloomed and it's a cheery orange color!

Last, but not least, my petunias are going nuts as well and there are purple and white blooms everywhere! I thought my hibiscus would have bloomed by now, but there is a bud ready to pop in about a week.

I had Beth of BPR Designs make a custom soap dish for me. The package arrived today and it was awesome! The soap dish is absolutely beautiful (and didn't sit without soap for long).

The package came with a really cute glass dragonfly magnet. Can you tell I love lime green?

Even more goodies were tucked inside with samples of soap from Lost River Rags and Candle Lights. You should check both shops out!

Welcome to Miami

A couple of weeks ago, I flew down to Florida (from Central NY) to visit my boyfriend's cousins (and do some sightseeing). It's been more than 12 years since I've been to Florida, so it was basically all new to me! We stayed in Pompano beach and drove to Orlando, Miami, Key Biscayne, and Key West. I had great fun with my new camera since it can take under water photos (those are coming...)! Here are a few from driving through Miami.

Bridal Jewelry

A local woman called me last Monday when I was on my way to Key West. That's a whole other story, but she needed jewelry for 5 bridesmaids and 2 flower girls by this Friday! I came up with a design in "pool" and "butter," express ordered beads, made an emergency run to a local bead store, made them, and packaged them.

It was quite fun to work with so much crystal! Everything was done with Swarovski crystal and sterling silver, with the exception of the one gold filled set. I had fun designing the packaging with the wedding colors in mind. (Names have been blurred to protect the innocent!) (I have to give credit for the idea to UnderGlass's beautiful packaging.)
I can't wait for the day that I can design my bridesmaids jewelry!

This week I'm participating in the Etsy Twitter Team's Going Green Event. All of my items are 15% off and I'm running a giveaway for a gift certificate to my shop! Below in an excerpt from the Etsy Twitter Team blog which highlihts small changes that can make a big difference for the environment.

The truth is that most of us would love to be “greener” on a daily basis if we knew exactly how to do it. The old “paper or plastic” question we used to get at the grocery store has become far more complicated and it can be difficult to know what choices are truly better for our planet. A good example of this is the actual answer to paper vs. plastic, which is NEITHER as both cost the planet in terms of resources, landfills, and energy use. A better choice is to buy or make reusable grocery or market totes, like these here.

But reusable market totes aren’t the only answer to a greener life. Below are some tips and suggestions that anyone can do on a daily basis that contribute to the well-being of our planet as well as ourselves. The best part about living greener is that one small step combines with the small steps of others to make a huge impact for the better.

USE IT UP, WEAR IT OUT, DO WITHOUT

This 1930s and 1940s saying was the equivalent of “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” and it was a wise mantra to live by. The more we consume (buy) the more of our natural resources are turned toward providing us with the things which we consume. Yet many of us find ourselves without the time or ability to stop buying the things we need on a daily basis. Fortunately, just changing what you buy, where you buy it, how often you buy it, or how often you use it can make a difference!

1. Buy REUSABLE - when you buy things like pens, paper, or other items that we think of as disposable, choose to buy those that can be refilled, are made of recycled materials, or can be used multiple times. Better yet, replace items like disposable napkins with fabric napkins you can make or buy yourself. They wash with the family laundry and can be made economically from salvaged fabric or remnants easily and quickly. If sewing is not your gift, you can find adorable ones here.

And while you are at it, ditch all the bottled water and buy a reusable water bottle (and a filter for your faucet like Brita or Pur if you’re worried about water quality). Single use bottled water bottles land in the trash heap at the rate of 845 a second!*

2. Think LOCAL – When buying food, changing the location of where you buy, and the type of item, can have a big impact. Look for locally grown vegetables and fruits at farmers’ markets in your area. These are generally smaller farms, grown without many of the pesticides and chemicals of food we buy in grocery stores, and have a much smaller ecological impact because we don’t have to use so much energy transporting, storing, and preserving the produce. It is also good for your community because it supports your local economy.

Etsy makes it easy to buy locally made handmade items through their Shop Local feature. Just type in your location and you can find local artists in your area.

3. Make a change in your HOME – The items in our homes such as cleaning supplies, laundry detergents, even light bulbs are a great place to begin changing your habits to create a greener life. There are many more choices on the market now for consumers looking for greener products. A good laundry detergent to try is Seventh Generation Laundry Detergents (I buy mine at Target) which are vegetable based, nontoxic, biodegradable, and work fantastically well.

There are also tried and true simple cleaning formulas you can make yourself from everyday items like vinegar and water, baking soda, lemons, even Hydrogen Peroxide, which works like bleach without the danger and also deodorizes.

Using cold water to wash your clothes saves 85% of the money and energy used to wash a load of clothes*. Use the sensor option on the dryer so it shuts itself off when the clothes are dry, or skip the dryer and hang clothes to dry on a rack or a line.

Change just the THREE most-often used light bulbs in your house to energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs saves 300 pounds of carbon dioxide a year*. These bulbs also last much longer, saving you money.

Since 1/6th of all the energy produced in the US is used for air conditioning, just turning your thermostat up two degrees can make a difference! Using fans, opening windows for ventilation, as well as keeping ducts clean and filters replaced all help lessen the stress on the environment, as well as reducing costs. The same is true in winter, when lowering your thermostat just two degrees has a similar impact. If you made the adjustments both winter and summer, you would save 2000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year*.

4. Think about PERSONAL CARE – This is an area that has true potential for a horror movie. One in every 100 personal care items on the market contains known or probable carcinogens. The industrial chemicals that are part of the basic ingredients include pesticides, reproductive toxins, surfactants, degreasers, and endocrine disruptors. What’s more, with the exception of color additives, the FDA does not review or regulate personal care items, even for children, before they go to market. The importance of this piece of information becomes obvious as soon as you start counting up the number of products you use every morning while getting ready for work or your day.

To begin changing, CUT BACK on the products you use or how often you use them. As you USE UP products, switch to an organic or all natural soap, cleanser, shampoo, or toothpaste. Organic mineral makeup, which doesn’t have talcs and chemicals, is an awesome way to help your skin, your budget (mineral products last much longer and require you to use less) and the environment. Etsy is an amazing resource for finding all natural soaps, cleansers, shampoo, toothpaste, and make up.

5. COMMIT your closet to buying less and reusing more- shopping thrifts, vintage, swapping clothes that don’t fit with a friend, or simply having less clothes to begin with are also important ways to help the environment. When you do buy, avoiding trendy, one-season only clothes is a good idea, especially if you invest instead in quality clothes that will last. Look for organic cottons, wool, and sustainable fibers like hemp and bamboo, as well as recycled fibers that use less energy than creating virgin fibers. One of the best ideas? Repairing and taking care of the clothes you do have. Just doing that alone cuts down on landfill volume!

Tomatoes!

I'm determined to get a decent crop of tomatoes and peppers this year! I live in an apartment complex, so my options only include planting in pots. I have some things planted in the lawn outside of my terrace but I don't think those are supposed to be there...

Anyway, last year I harvested all of 7 grape tomatoes. I've switched things around this year in hopes of getting a better return. I have larger pots, better soil, and more plants. Probability alone says I should get at least 21 grape tomatoes! Everything is already flowering. I'm hoping to get a pepper this year.

I'm pretty proud of my 2 foot tall plants! Unfortunately, my parents aren't having as much luck. Chipmunks apparently love tomato plants. They have planted at least 2 separate tomato crops due to the insatiable appetite of the chipmunk family!

All of my houseplants are outside and loving the humidity. My hibiscus should bloom in a month or so. I can't wait to photograph that!

My boyfriend got me a camera as an early birthday gift. My old camera had been suffering for quite a while. Ever since the trip to Grand Cayman Island, it has not been the same (it doesn't like sand much, I found out). Anyway, I visited my parents this week and took a stroll through the yard to see what I could do with the new camera. It turns out that quite a lot is going on in late May!

Glass artist Russ Colwell has worked in stained glass, mosaics and fused glass as well as metal fabrication and digital art. If I had to choose one favorite item from Helix Elemental, which contains glass pendants, earrings, and barrettes, I would be debating with myself for many hours trying to choose just one!

Russ says, "I use 90 COE thin glass and dichroic glass. I usually work with transparent rather than opaque glass. I also use dichroic on clear glass rather than on black glass because I like to borrow from the colors of the glass beneath the dichroic. It also has more of a gem quality.
I have a preference for heart pendants because I never seem to run out of new ways to layer and combine the various colors of glass. If I have anything that can be called a signature style, it would probably be my way of using multiple layers of glass and fusing with a very “shallow” tack fuse. Rather than the more common techniques of full fusing and incorporating all the layers into one, I like to retain the shape and defined edges of the glass while finding ways to make the layers work together."

He likes making jewelry the best of all things he's tried. Often he shares ideas with his wife, Christina Colwell, who is a mixed media folk artist.

I have been so busy lately that I haven't posted in over a week! I'm really excited about doing craft shows at Spot Coffee in Rochester, NY! I was there last weekend and I've been there this weekend, and I'll be going tonight! I'm about to burn out between this and my school work. However, it's a lot of fun and I really enjoy doing shows and meeting other area crafters.

At RIT, I've just started doing research with Dr. Chris Collison. Without giving away too much, I'm studying the interactions of carbon nanotubes. It's pretty exciting stuff, and it may just be the topic of my graduate studies, since I'm still in the process of looking at schools and figuring out what I want to do for the next 5 years!

Yes, my sad excuse for a studio is no more that a poor little desk stacked high with supplies. What I’m not showing is the table half covered in more things, the buffet covered in even more stuff, and the utility closet that is holding about 30 plastic bins (the shoebox size as they call it) full of beads and findings. Understand that I’m a college student living in a small apartment. If I had my way, I’d have my own room flanked with tables for working and hutches for storage!

I finally entered a piece into the Etsy Beadweaver's (EBW) monthly challenge. I was pretty much obligated to do so since the theme is tropical holiday! I started with grand plans of making beaded orchids but 75% of the way through one orchid it went into the incomplete stash. Heh, that stash is getting a bit too big! I believe I have made it known that I love bright tropical things. I even went as far as to paint a mural in my bedroom growing up where all of the walls were covered in palm trees, beaches, waterfalls, animals, and flowers. Luckily, I had a 15 foot wall on one side for a full sized palm tree! But, for some reason, I also love wolves. I've always been partial to dogs but something about a wolf has me drawn in. I went searching through Etsy one day for wolves to see what I could come up with and I found two amazing artists.

Valerie of Greendogs has wonderful notecards. Her profile has an important message:

My hope is that these wolf dog images will help to dispel some of the negative myths, & promote something positive for these amazing animals. For some of us it is the only glimpse we will ever get, of the treasured, disappearing, wolf.

Wolf dogs are in a misunderstood limbo between wild animal & household pet, not fitting in anywhere & difficult to adopt out. Many of them are put to sleep as soon as they turn up at local animal shelters, as well as many dogs that have very little or no wolf in them at all, are put down simply because they have a similar likeness, or look “wolfey”.

There is also stunning photography on her blog! I strongly encourage you to check it out!

Another artist I found is Kathleen of Ladyhawk1. She loves to paint animals. It shows in the beauty of her art. My favorite item in her shop is, of course, a double matted print of a wolf.

I also love that she made mini works of art by converting her prints into scrabble tile pendants.

Circuit Boards!

I received a whole bunch of old (I mean uber dusty!) circuit boards from my dad. There was one that was just so cool because it had blue dots all over! Such a nice change from the usual all-green boards. Check it out!

There are also some really neat components mixed in. Some are way too big to make jewelry out of but look neat for photographing!

So, you want to know seven random things? Take this!

1. My parents force fed me vegetables as a child so that I would grow up and enjoy them. It worked for the most part. For some reason, I still can’t find a way to like brussels sprouts, spinach, or beets.

2. When I was about 7 years old, one of my aunts gave me a box of seed beads because she was having problems using them. Being that young, I was more mesmerized by the color then what they could actually be used for. It wasn’t until after her death when I was 9 that I started using them and discovering the awesomness of beadweaving. Trust me, though, I don’t think you really want to see what I came up with!

3. As a result of said beadweaving, beads and supplies and all sorts of things began building nests and armies in my carpet. It’s no surprise that I’ve stepped on at least 5 needles as a kid. One of my friends suffered the wrath of one of my needles. Her mother had to come over to comfort her and take the needle out. From that day on, my parents always referred to her (even in her presence) as Needlefoot.

4. In the past 3 years I have lived in 4 different places. I guess it’s not as surprising when I say that I’m an undergraduate student. I lived at home, transferred to the dorms, back home, then to an off-campus house, and then into an apartment. I’m hoping to stay at the apartment for at least another year and a half. I’m not looking forward to moving heaps of stuff (kind way of putting it) again!

5. Last time I checked, I was 5’9.” I like being tall but I hate looking for clothes that are long enough and skinny enough. ¾ sleeves rest on the inside of my elbows and if I’m lucky, a t-shirt will just come to my jeans. I must say that it is nice that “long” things are in style now so they fit great!

6. I’m a very messy person and I procrastinate (like right now, I should be working on the presentation I have to give tomorrow). But, I absolutely love it when I get into “cleaning mode” and everything gets clean, organized, and spotless. It’s like that right now. I give it another week before I mess it up again!

7. I have a soft spot for sour gummy worms.

My First Car Accident

As the title suggests, I was in my first car accident Wednesday. It was nothing major. The guy behind me hit a patch of ice (he hit it faster than I did) and he rear-ended me. It made the weirdest noise, like something was being ripped off my car. He left a bit of a dent in my trunk. Here's the sucky part; if I owned the car, I wouldn't care and just say don't worry about it. However, it's a lease so I have to get it fixed. Oh well. They guy who hit me (who happens to live in the same apartment complex as me and is pretty much the same major as me) was very nice and took the blame for the incident.

Now I have to go get it fixed. Hopefully it won't take more than a few hours. If it takes more than a day I'll need a rental to get to class BUT I'm only 20 so I don't know how well that will go over.

On a side note, I listed a new pendant! It's a bit different that what I've been making lately but I love things in rainbows!

RIT Pep Band

Aside from my jewelry business and college work, I am the secretary of the RIT Pepband. It started my freshman year when a friend proposed the idea of a band. It formed a week later. It wasn't much to begin with, but three years later, with better organization and more members, the band is on fire! We now have 50-60 active members, compared to the average of 12 when it first started.

Now we have a full drum line, sousaphones (jumbo tubas), a sound system, sousaphone covers, trombone slide covers, and mellophones. A member of the RIT community made a video of the band that is narrated by our conductor. It's a really great video! Our conductor has a confident and motivational personality and excellent speaking skills, which are evident in the video. Check it out!

On a side note, there are no new listings today, but I'll feature an item that has long since been buried. It is another resin pendant with a twist. I used a technique called repousse to shape metal foil and filled it with colored resin. There is a clear coat on top so it is really glossy.

More Than Just Jewelry

I always refer back to high school, but I suppose that's because the art teachers were the best and so welcoming. They embraced and encouraged creativity, even though they knew I was going into science. One of my art teachers was there for only two years, but I had her for both. She was, compared to me, on the very left end of the creativity scale if you know what I mean. She had us doing things that no art teacher had ever tried.
I recall a unit where she had us drawing on plexiglass sheets with marker and making monoprints with them. It was messy, barely controllable, and almost drove me nuts. But then again, my favorite medium is colored pencil, which for me allows a great deal of control. The monoprint exercise ended up being a point for me where I could experiment more freely without worrying about the final outcome. Although, I must admit that it was fun!

One of the classes I had her for was AP studio art. For that class, the AP exam was "due" in May like the other AP exams but required a large portfolio. We had to come up with a topic or theme or idea and work with it to create 12 pieces. We also had to submit 12 additional pieces not related to that topic, and send in 5 actual works for a technical skill assessment. Let's just say that I was very busy that year. My topic was marching band. Sounds lame, but it was tricky. The high school I went to, West Genesee, was a powerhouse for marching band. The school had won the last 31 out of 35 state championships, including a winning streak 16 years in the making. In my junior year, the streak was broken and it was horrible. I didn't mind losing, but the whole spirit was ruined and the people who hated the bandies found another reason to scorn us. Anywho, my art was an attempt to capture that feeling, and the change required to bring the band back.

Chemistry Post

This has nothing to do with jewelry. I came across a "blog readability" test thing and was wondering what classifies a blog as being undergrad, post grad, and so on. So I was thinking...as mentioned in the previous post, I wrote a paper about polymer-clay nanocomposites and eutectic mixtures of fatty acids. I just finished it yesterday and had to come up with a title for it. I read it to my boyfriend (the title, not the paper) and got the effect where all you can hear is crickets in the background. It was a bit amusing just because I know he had a very minimal background in science and most of the words were just jibberish (although I must admit myself that before researching the topics I knew almost nothing too). So anyway, this is my experiment to see if trying to explain in "plain" english the paper I wrote will increase my "blog readability" status. So here goes...

Polymer-clay nanocomposites (not the kind of polymer clay I'm used to working with :P) are a relatively new class of materials that involve a clay (duh) and a polymer. The clay is dispersed in the polymer on a nanometer scale. That is, the clay is very, very small and the polymer still retains its transparent properties. The point of this you ask? Well, combining the two materials in this way (via in situ and emulsion polymerization processes) (aka mixing w/ two mixing bowls or mixing by throwing everything in one bowl) creates a material that has properties of both of the initial components and is stronger. These special materials are used in cars, batteries, construction, you name it. That wasn't too bad was it?

Now for the eutectic mixture. In english, that means that the components of the mixture, when at the correct ratio, all melt at the same time (some very interesting chemistry there since the melting points of the individual components are higher than what the mixture's melting temperature is). So basically, these materials have a high latent heat of fusion, which means that they have the ability to hold onto heat and release it without changing temperature by much. This occurs when the substance melts and resolidifies. (aka phase change material, PCM). Why would we want that? That's exactly the kind of chemistry involved in solar heating applications where the eutectic mixture can store energy and then release it when a building drops below a certain temperature. I found a cool picture that sort of gives an idea of what happens:

I won't go into any more detail than that, but I learned a lot about how chemical processes can be linked to engineering applications. I did initially want to be a chemical engineer in high school, but I didn't exactly know what it meant. I have a better idea now, but I'm only 26 weeks (not consecutive) away from graduating so I'm not switching now!

So...here's the results of the "test:"

Interesting. Well, comments anyone? Are there any scientists out there? I'm wondering if my synopsis makes any sense, or is at all interesting.
To me, it was interesting in the researching stages but as I started writing more and more of my paper it kind of got annoying (but that might have been due to the crazy amount of references I used and trying to organize them all).

I finally had a little bit of time between the crazy holidays and writing my paper about polymer-clay nanocomposites and Eutectic Mixtures for use as Phase Change Materials to make some new items! Haha that was an interesting paper. Anyway, my super secret sources of old computer parts have equipped me with way more than I can currently handle, but it gives me options. My dad brough home (oops now you know...) a really cool board that has blue spots all over it. I can't wait to use it because it has some interest other than just green lines! The new pendants I have are in cool bezels and contain parts from computers and calculators.

Although my other explorations don't involve computer parts, I still think they are neat! I have dug into my extensive stash of sprinkles and have begun making the sprinkle pendants. I've been meaning to for a very long time now. I have dolphins, palm trees, stars, hearts, turtles, cars, cows, sticks, lips, bears, dinosaurs, and all sorts of other creatures and shapes. Yay!

Calculator Anatomy 101

I’m kind of mad my calculator decided to die because now I have to go out and spend another $100 on one so I can pass my test Wednesday! But…my brother and I had a heck of a time dismantling the calculator to see what was inside. He’s a computer guy so he knew what he was looking at. As far as I was concerned, every piece was subject to being dunked in resin forever! Haha! I took a photo of what came out. I had fun with the button-pad-thingie because it was soft and popped back up after being pressed (duh). But it was fun anyway.

The calculator pieces will become jewelry eventually, but for now I have new additions to Etsy made of computer pieces. I love the one rectangular pendant because the arrangement of the circuitry looks like a little flower!

Etsy Artists Revealed: Series Two

Jewelry, bookmarks, and magnets made by Angela of Clock Rocks is a couple parts classy, a few parts intriguing, and a pinch of whimsy. Where else would you find Swiss cheese earrings made delicate with pearls? I am absolutely in love with the earrings she makes using circular drops. They are fun and colorful.

A bunch of pieces use Hill Tribe Silver and Thai silver which are not only high quality components, but are carefully handmade. She also uses Swarovski crystal, which is a big favorite. I’ve found jewelry made with jade, amethyst, tourmaline, dumortierite, mother of pearl, carnelian, jasper, tiger eye and more in her shop.

Her magnet sets are cute, but not overdone. Each set is different and the papers used behind the glass marbles range from pretty and delicate to bursts of color.

In an attempt to meet more people on Etsy and get to know their work, I will be "featuring" some sellers. I tend to look at jewelry more, even though I make it myself. I'm trying to look around more and see what's out there because lets face it, there is more than just jewelry!

Altered books, papercrafts, and jewelry made by Amanda of Tackled and Shackled is whimsical and original. I am a fan of the flower rings. They are just so cute! I think I'm in love with the simplicity of the glass beads and freashwater pearls.

She definately has an eye for repurposing old objects. There is a Vintage Notebook made almost completely made out of recycled materials. She also has a really neat clock made from a vintage lampshade in a very rich and warming shade of garnet.

This is definately a shop to check out if you like repurposed vintage items, classy and whimsical jewelry, or unique switchplate covers.

Palm Trees yay!

I also listed a whole bunch of new things that I just didn't have the time for before.

I'm trying to get more presents from Etsy because everything there is handmade and beautiful. I bought a really pretty plate for my mom from Indoor girl like this one.

My only class today is yoga. This could get interesting...

Lime Greeeeen

I absolutely love beaded cuffs. It's something about the way the glass beads are woven together to create a fabric. I haven't gotten around to making a really large cuff yet. I've found myself sticking to smaller projects with picot edges instead. I found one by Miamiamia Designs that I absolutely love. I love the combination of lime green (my favorite color!), stripes, and circles. Not to mention it looks retro. I seem to like retro things now. My mom complains that I wasn't even around when it was originally popular, but whatever!

This has nothing to do with beadwork...but I finally got a jeweler's saw and some blades. I've had a sheet of copper sitting around just waiting to get cut up! I can't wait! I have so many ideas. I've been really interested in working with resin lately and want to incorporate the two together. The only "tools" I'm missing now are a torch and a kiln. Both of which I don't think the landlord would appreciate me having...especially since I only have minimal experience with them!

The work of In My Head Studios

Sunday, I met Vickie of In My Head Studios at the Community Nursery School of Irondequoit Craft Show. It was really exciting to meet someone from Etsy in person! I love looking at jewelry wherever I go. The range of wearable art that can be created is really quite incredible.

The pendants that she creates are absolutely wonderful little pieces of art for your neck. I like this one in particular. Each one is a mini collage and there are images on both sides. She can also make custom pendants using anything, including photos of loved ones!

She also makes lovely little domino ornaments, just like the one in the photo.

I also got to see some of her original artwork. I took a class on collage at RIT and gained an appreciation for how images, ephemera, and found objects can be combined to form a cohesive image. Her work is very warm and begs attention since it is full of depth and interest. She has a great attention for detail and I love how other components like beads contribute to the overall look of each piece. Visit her blog to find out more about her jewelry and art!

Final exams are next week! I should be stressed but I'm not (yet). The best part is all of the freedom from not having to go to class! I can't wait for a break and some time to make jewelry!
